I recently registered for the AIR conference in Washington, DC and I’m really stoked to hear Christian Cantrell, Mike Chambers, and Kevin Hoyt talk about the highly anticipated release of Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) and its capabilities. It’s perfect timing for Adobe to launch this campaign, considering the hyped launch of Pownce, which has a really nice AIR application download.
A few days ago I downloaded the AIR SDK and have been working on my first application (nothing sexy). I was really amazed at how easy it was to get it up and running. I also really like the Dreamweaver CS3 AIR extention for packaging the .air application. This is really cool technology and I’m sure we will see some innovative AIR applications popping up in the coming year.
Conference Details
The Adobe on AIR Bus Tour is an 18 city road show through North America, where you can learn how to bring your web applications to the desktop with Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR). The best part about the conference is - it’s free! That’s right - free conference, food, beverages, and swag. Register for the conference
What is AIR?
The Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) is a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) to the desktop. Below are a few of the features included in the Adobe AIR Beta:
- File I/O API
- Windowing APIs
- SQLite embedded database
- HTML within Flash content
- ActionScript / JavaScript Script bridging
- Application command-line arguments
Adobe AIR will provide a set of APIs to make it easy to develop connected applications that work while offline. More info: http://onair.adobe.com/
