It’s Oscar night and there’s no better place to see the evolution of design than the shows marketing posters from the past 40+ years. Just about every typography, graphic, and photography effect is represented in the collection below. You can probably guess the year each poster is from, especially the ones from the 70’s. Hovering over a poster will reveal its year.

You’re right, it isn’t difficult to work out which are from the 70’s! 1973 has some real Saturday Night Fever about it. 1974 has to be my favourite, though.
Where did you find all these, Doug? Did you have to copy one-by-one from the Oscar posters site?! If so, you’ve saved a lot of clicking back & forth !

Yeah, the ‘74 poster is pretty cool!. Don’t you think it was pretty cutting-edge for the time? It has a pretty modern photography effect that is still pretty popular today.
I really like the 1993 poster, cool colors and typography… very clean!

These are great. I really like the ‘06 posters because of the emphasis on the history and tradition of the Oscars.

Handy presentation. Thanks.
‘95 is quite striking.
Noticeable is how many have the Oscar smack in the middle of the poster. Some having ALL the elements centre justified.
